Professor John Shepherd, MA, PhD, CMath, FIMA, FRS

Prof. Shepherd is the Director of the Earth System Modelling Initiative at the Southampton Oceanography Centre. He studied physics at Cambridge, followed by a PhD on superconductivity. His career includes work on sulphur dioxide deposition onto land and water surfaces for the CEGB. He moved to the Fisheries Laboratory at Lowestoft in 1974 to work on the control of radioactive waste disposal in the sea, and on bioeconomic models of fishing fleet capacity. He worked at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University, New York, on ocean circulation modelling in 1978/79 and returned to Lowestoft to work on the assessment of deep sea waste disposal and then on the mathematical modelling of fish populations and improved methods of stock assessment. From 1989 to 1994 he was Deputy Director of MAFF's Directorate of Fisheries Research at Lowestoft. He moved to Southampton to become the first Director of the Southampton Oceanography Centre from 1994 to 1999. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999.

Prof. Shepherd's spare-time activities include rowing and music. He is married with two grown-up children.
